The Danish Low Carbon Street in Haiyan China is the first sustainable community towards a sustainable city. With Haiyan as one of Chinas role models for sustainability in the Chinese five year energy plan, the area of 60.000 squaremeters includes future residential, commercial and open green spaces planned for the city population.
We analysed, optimised and designed the new Low Carbon conceptual masterplan for The Danish Low Carbon Street along with sustainability guidelines for sites, buildings and public transportation with support from Haiyan Urban Investment Group, Wuyuan Sub-district office of people's Government of Haiyan County and the first secretary on China.
The conceptual masterplan was developed based on a newly developed Sustainability Strategy, which ensures minimising the energy need and carbon emissions. In the strategy energy, water, waste, environment, ecology and transport is optimised and the future low energy use is sustained through various initiatives like sustainability management, energy efficient behaviour and user involvement.
Xiaohong Shen, First Secretary of China, expressed the masterplan as innovative and pioneering, and already after the presentation of the conceptual masterplan shaked hands upon a new agreement about renovation and retrofitting the existing building mass in the area as well as consultancy about sustainability management.
We understood the importance of integrating a high level of social sustainability with technological ingenuity. The new development in the area is based on a building system inspired from successful developments in Copenhagen in Denmark, and minimises the carbon emissions from transportation by being planned as a car-free area with a safe environment for pedestrians and bicycles.
The project integrates future persistence in minimising the energy consumption with the strategic step Sustain, where a sustainability centre together with a energy facility and a green belt of vegitation continually acquire a sustainable awareness for the residents in the area.
The project also integrates environmental, social and economic sustainability and stands as a role model for sustainable urban planning in Haiyan that achieves energy efficiency, environmental awareness, technological ingenuity and social harmony.
