Coupling access to sustainable energy with mitigation of deforestation in the ACP region

This paper identifies the key trends in sub-Sahara Africa and places the actions in the energy sector in a larger context. In the subsequent chapters, experiences from the ACP EU Energy Facility are analyzed covering four ways of improving access to energy that are especially relevant to protect forest resources: improved cookstoves, improved charcoal production, afforestation, and fuel switch to biogas.
Community-based management of energy infrastructures in the ACP-region

The paper describes the scene for community-based management within the context of global efforts to secure access to sustainable energy for all. It also defines community-based management vis-à-vis other business models, based on scientific literature and reports as well as experiences from the ACP-EU Energy Facility. Strengths and weaknesses are identified, and conclusions drawn to provide recommendations.

The purpose of this study is to develop a snapshot of the current status of energy access, opportunities in Southern and East Africa and to reposition the EEP-S&EA market niche and value proposition to meet the needs of the private sector. The study covers the original 15 countries (Botswana, Burundi, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi) referred to as EEP S&EA III region in this report.
